４４人が亡くなった東京・新宿歌舞伎町のビルの火災から、１日で１６年です。当時ビルがあった場所に３１日、遺族が訪れ、手作りの花を供えて犠牲者を悼みました。

平成１３年９月１日の未明、新宿区歌舞伎町にあった雑居ビルの階段の踊り場付近から火が出て燃え広がり、３階のマージャンゲーム店や４階の飲食店にいた従業員や客など合わせて４４人が死亡しました。



この火災から１日で１６年になるのを前に、３１日夜、火災があった現場に遺族が集まりました。



火災が起きたビルは１１年前に取り壊され、今は別の建物が建てられていますが、集まった遺族は現場の前で「４４」と形づくられたローソクを添えた手作りの花を供えたあと、ゆっくりと手を合わせて、犠牲者を悼んでいました。



当時２６歳と２２歳だった娘２人を亡くした植田安子さん（６５）は「１６年がたった今、自分が唯一、娘にできることがきょうの献花です。事件が風化しないよう今後も続けていきたい」と話していました。



この火災は、警視庁が放火の疑いが強いと見て、捜査を続けていますが、今も未解決のままです。



また、ビルの防火扉の前などには物が置かれていたため、避難の支障となり、多数の犠牲者を出す原因の１つになったことから、火災の翌年に消防法が改正され、消防の立ち入り検査の権限の拡大や悪質な違反をした企業への罰則が強化されました。
